Why Do Professional Photographers
Charge What They Charge?

In this digital age where everyone has digital cameras, scanners and home “photo printers”, when people upload their photos to a local drug store website and pick them up a few hours later, we hear this all the time - How in the world do Professional Photographers charge $55 for an 8×10 when they cost just $5.50 at the drug store?

Here’s why.

Simply put, you’re not just paying for the actual photograph, you’re paying for time and expertise. First, let’s look at the actual time involved. If you don’t read this entire page, at least read this first part.

For a two hour portrait session:

- one hour of travel to and from the session
- two hours of shooting
- 30 minutes of setup, preparation, preparing the client etc.
- 30 minutes to load the photos onto a computer (2 - 4 Gb of data)
- 30 minutes to back up the files on an external drive
- 3 - 4 hours of Photoshop time including cropping, contrast, color, sharpening, saving a copy for print and a copy for the internet and backing up the edited photographs
- 2 - 3 hours to talk to the client, answer questions, receive their order and payment, order their prints, receive and verify prints, package prints, schedule shipment and drop package off at Fed Ex.
- For local customers, we also print a set of all of their photos, and meet them at our studio to review the photos and place their order. Meeting and travel time averages 2 hours.

You can see how one two hour session easily turns into more than ten hours of work from start to finish. So when you see a Photographer charging a $200 session fee for a two hour photo shoot, you are not paying them $100 / hour.

That is just for a small normal portrait session. Imagine just the TIME invested in your wedding. That’s not taking into account the professional level prints (there is a HUGE difference between a local one hour lab and a professional lab working specifically with a photographer and their color specifications, textures, mounting, protective sprays and more. And there is the graphics artists back in the studio, who is working to ensure your images are the absolute artistic best they can be. And the computers and programs it takes to ensure that the best technology is at hand to work with your images.

- I won’t bore you with the details, but a eight hour wedding typically amounts to at least two to three full 40 hour work weeks worth of time. A quickie shoot and burn amateur service just doesn’t provide you with the professional attention and detail let alone professionally printed prints, albums and other products you deserve for your wedding day.

Now for the expertise.

Shooting professional photography is a skill, acquired through years of experience. Even though a lower cost professional camera now costs around $3,500, taking professional portraits involves much more than a nice camera.

Most Professional Photographers take years to go from buying their first decent camera to making money with their photography. In addition to learning how to use the camera itself, there is a mountain of other equipment involved, as well as numerous software programs used to edit and print photographs, run a website etc.

And let’s not forget that you actually have to have people skills, be able to communicate, make people comfortable in front of the camera - and posing people to make them look their best in a photograph is a skill all by itself. And, the ability to help you actually ENJOY your wedding photography! If you’re enjoying yourself, it shows in the images!

Think of it this way - the next time you pay $X to get your hair done, a pair of regular scissors only costs $1.50 (But your professional hair dresser has a more expensive pair!) But you gladly pay a lot more to hire a Professional.

When looking for a wedding photographer, consider the fact that this is one of the top 3 special days of your life…along with the birth of your children and their wedding day. The cake gets eaten, the DJ goes home, but the wedding images are thelasting physical memory to last a lifetime and to pass on to your children and their children. Are you really willing to have a hobbiest or amateur who doesn’t have the experience, the proper equipment (It takes much much more than just a camera!), the knowledge, and the desire to capture your wedding day?

It’s certainly something to think about!

Things have been slow.. but have no fear - 2009 will be busy busy busy! We have been taking random shots at the barn. I've been taking a marketing course from EPNet with Peter Demott. I've been anxiously awaiting for spring so my hands don't freeze while i'm taking photos!!

First off - HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope 2009 brings everyone happiness & joy!! I had the pleasure of photographing "Beau" - my trainers Sec A Welsh Stallion. I spent about an hour grooming him and making his thick mane shine. He was so well mannered and is very sweet. He was very fresh on the snow. I did not have a helper with me, so it was harder to capture has trotting and cantering shots. All he wanted to do was hallop around and flip up his tail and be a proud stallion that he is! By the end of the shoot he was exhausted. I led him back into the back and he pretty much hung hi head down low and totally ignored all the mares hanging there head over the stall doors. I put him back in his stall ad gave him some extra hay for being such a good boy. The last image to the right was him in his pasture yawning. He must have yawned 10 times.. I have more images of him yawning, but that had to be the funniest!

Equine Affaire is right around the corner! Mystical Photography is VERY excited to be "featured" at two different breed booths this year. We are making a slide show for the Appaloosa Booth featuring appaloosas throughout New England.

We are also excited that our name will be on stallion promotion fliers that will be handed out for "Hopeview Mack" at the North American Spotted Draft booth. We are also taking pictures for Kristen from Angel Mist Farm on Sunday during one of her demonstrations.

We also plan on taking pictures at Shaina Humphrey's Fashion Show clinic!

People should start believing me when I tell them I will be big and famous someday! :) Everyone starts small. This will be my second full year. My third year should be a hit. Thank you to ALL who helped contribute and had faith in me!

I have often been asked why do I like horses so much. Look into one's eyes. There you will see generations of horses who have served the humans for thousands of years faithfully for nothing in return. Beaten horses, starved hoses, horses who no longer possess a spirit. They deserve to be loved and respected as much as humanly possible. Let them run free again. This is just a quick sneak peak on the pictures from the photo shoot on Friday @ Angel Mist Farm with "Hopeview Mack". He is a North American Spotted Draft Stallion that rides & drives. He is standing at Angel Mist Farm in Chester, MA. This guy was so well behaved for a stallion. He was a complete gentlemen the whole time. Kristina hooked him up to a harness and he took us through a drive down a country dirt road. He was perfect.

Mystical Photography has had a great 2008 year. We're not done yet though! September and October are going to be big months for horse shows. We have some very big horse shows coming up including hunter/jumper shows, dressage, and combined training shows.

Weddings are done for the year, unless of course I book some more. I have one booked for 2009 in January as of right now. Spread the word. :) Low Key weddings are my specialty!

We just had the opportunity to go to Coker Farm in Bedford New York and photograph a clinic that was hosted by Leslie Burr Howard. Even though it was down pouring, we still managed to get a few decent pictures of the riders from the Junior Olympic Pipeline Team.

Mystical Photography made the cover of Massachusetts Horse for the October/November Issue. This is huge for us considering that this issue is going to be handed out through the Equine Affaire. I cannot reveal what the image is yet, but you will soon find out! Stay tuned for details!

Mystical Photography will also be advertising at Citizens Bank in Wilbraham, MA the 2nd week of November until the last week of December. 2009 should be a great year!

Our images from Stateline Tack are also in the magazines! Look for some horses in there that i'm sure you will recognize!

So Far - So Good!!

2008 has proved to be a fabulous year for us. I have met so many new people, and gained many new friendships and contacts. One of my highlights off 2008 was having the opportunity to go to Peter Leone's farm in Greenwich, CT for the Olympic Pipeline Clinic. It was an amazing experience. I also am very grateful to have the opportunity to start doing some of the eventing shows. I love the sport, and I love capturing the moments. Wedding have also been a huge hit! A few of my favorite pictures. Don't worry, more will come. I swear. :)

We are now in full show season! We went to our first major horse show this past weekend. It was a huge success. The show had a lot of entries and the weather held out. Here are a few images that are my fav!

Our show season is going into full swing! Mystical Photography has already covered a 2-day clinic at Prince Charles Enterprises Farm sponsored by the Connecticut Appaloosa Association. We also covered Crimson Acres Wooley Horse Show in Orange, MA judged my Kelli Labbee. Proofs are online and available for purchase. Please go to Mystical Photography Proofs.

This weekend is going to be a very busy weekend. We have our first wedding on Friday, April 11th. April 12th, i'll be following the bad boys of the Swill Merchants @ Brass Cat in Easthampton. I also have something special to give to them, but they don't know about it yet. Hopefully it will come in on time. And then Sunday afternoon, we are doing the Swill Merchants promo shoots in Northampton somewhere for their new & upcoming album. These men are going to make it big. I can feel it! I support them 100%!!

Mystical Photography is also EXCITED to announce that we will be working for/with Stateline Tack Compnay as well as Country Supply for product shoots and cover shoots. Everything is being finalized now. Your horse could be on the next cover of the next magazine!

We have also picked up some freelance work for Bits & Bridles Magazine. Keep an eye out for that contact sheet as soon as I recieve it.

Our next "big" show is CAA Regional Horse Show in Topsfield, MA on May 3rd & 4th! Look for us there!

I have not written in awhile. A lot has been going on, and a lot has been changing. 2007 was proved to be a great year for Mystical Photography. As a first year photographer going out to all of the Equine Shows, we think we did our best to provide the best service could to our clients.

2008 is going to prove a lot to myself, and to other people. We are booked solid all the way up until October. We have a total of 39 horse shows/clinics that we are attending. As of right now, we are not accepting any more requests for horse shows unless they are in April or October.
For the 2008 horse shows, we are getting a whole viewing station built into the back of the expedition. We are very excited to see the results of this. (Display being built by Jay of Wired in Springfield, MA)

I would also like to write a small blurb about getting into the Local Band Scene. The Swill Merchants were the first band that I had ever photographed and or taken promo pictures of. They loved my photos and told other people. Word of mouth is your best business. I have taken photos of the following bands: The Next Extension, Giah, Jacob’s Son, Nosho, & The Distributors. We are looking forward to the weekend of February 16th, where we are getting an opportunity to shoot State Of Fate & Gone By Daylight. Indoor shooting is way different then what I’m used to. In equine world, we depend a lot on Natural Light. As you all know, there is no natural light inside of dark night clubs with lights flashing everywhere. We do the best we can and we provide great results, that all of the bands love so far.

For 2008, we are advertising in multiple magazines and websites. We are being advertised in MA Horse, NABA Yearly Guide, Valley Advocate, Yellowpages Online, and many more small online advertising sites. We also have been published online for Blast Magazine. Briana King wrote a kick ass article and we provided the pictures.

Eventually, I do want a studio. I do want to become huge. However, I’m only 24. I’m taking this all in day by day. I won’t give up. If I fail, it will make me try harder. Till next time..

2008 Will Be Great!

2008 is going to prove to be a good year. Mystical Photography has already been confirmed at many local & regional horses. Connecticut Appaloosa Association & Green Mountain Appaloosa Assication Regional horses shows will prove to be a big hit. Mystical Photography has also been chose to be the official photographer for the 2008 Olympic Pipeline Program hosted by Shaina Humphrey of Lucky Horse Farm. We also are covering the famous Mark Shaffer clinic in April of 2008 at Blythewood Farm in Pittsfield, MA. Other farms and shows that we will be at include: Cornerstone Farm Schooling Series in Foster RI, Wishing Rock Farm Schooling Series in Suffield CT, Crimson Acres Shows & Game Nights in Orange MA and many many more! Stay tuned for a complete list.
